Starting
My child has never danced. Where do they start?
Fit & Groove, our foundation program, is built exactly for that — from age five, no experience assumed, and no classical costume required. If they take to it, the classical academy is the next door along, in the same school. (Launching this fall.)
What is the difference between the three programs?
KDC Academy is the classical Kuchipudi school, the one that has been running since 2001. Fit & Groove is the foundation program for young children new to dance — contemporary, culture-agnostic, focused on posture, focus and confidence. Celebrations covers weddings, milestones and family occasions — the choreography on its own, or the whole event arranged for you.
Can we join in the middle of the year?
Yes. We don’t run an annual curriculum with a single intake, so new students are welcome any time. Your first class is free — come and see the room before deciding anything.
Is there an age limit?
Five and up, and there is no upper one. Adults are welcome, whether you are starting for the first time or returning after years away.
What should we wear to a first class?
Something comfortable you can move in, and bare feet. Nothing needs to be bought before a first class. Once a student enrolls, classes are danced in a simple Indian outfit — a salwar kameez, or leggings and a kurta — and we’ll tell you what you need.
How classes run
Are classes in a group or one-to-one?
Classes are taught in groups. Students preparing for their Rangapravesam receive one-to-one instruction and training for that preparation.
What happens if we miss a class?
If a student misses a class at their regular location for a valid reason, they are welcome to make it up by attending a similar class at one of our other locations.
Do you teach online?
Classes are taught in person. We taught online through Covid and chose to return fully to the room — dance is taught better with a teacher who can correct a posture by standing beside you. The one exception is Rangapravesam preparation for out-of-state students, for whom online training is available.
Who provides costumes and jewelry?
Families buy their own, and we will tell you exactly what is needed and where to get it, so nobody overspends on a first costume.
KDC Academy
How long does it take to reach Rangapravesam?
Typically six to seven years from beginner level, though it varies with practice and commitment more than with time.
How is the KDC Academy curriculum structured?
In three stages: Beginner (A1, A2), Intermediate (Jathis, Jathiswaram, Ramayana Sabdam, Koluvaithevaa Ranga Sayi), and Advanced (L1–L4), leading to Rangapravesam. Students who choose the certified path also take annual Level 1–4 examinations affiliated with Padmavathi University, Tirupathi.
When are KDC Academy classes?
East Windsor — Saturdays, 2:00–5:00 PM. Kendall Park — Saturdays, 9:15 AM–12:00 PM. Monroe — Fridays, 5:45–7:30 PM. For the Dallas-area branch, message us for the current schedule.
Is there a formal certification?
Yes. Students who choose the certified path take annual Level 1 to Level 4 examinations, affiliated with Padmavathi University, Tirupathi.
Will my child get to perform?
Yes, at every level. There is the school’s annual recital, and the community and cultural events the school takes part in through the year.
Does anyone actually finish?
Many students have completed their Rangapravesam here. Some of them teach now, one as far away as Dallas. Their ceremony portraits are on the graduate wall.
What is Kuchipudi?
One of the eight classical Indian dance forms, originating in the village of Kuchipudi in Andhra Pradesh, and drawing on the Natya Shastra. It is distinctive for combining dance, music and acting in one form.
How is it different from the other classical forms?
Kuchipudi blends Nritta (pure dance), Nritya (expressive dance) and Natya (dramatic representation). It is known for fast, intricate footwork, storytelling through facial expression and mudras, and the flexibility to carry both devotional and secular narratives.
Can anyone learn it?
Yes. Age and background matter far less than turning up regularly.
Fit & Groove
Does my child need to know Kuchipudi to join Fit & Groove?
No. No connection to Kuchipudi is required — this door is open to every family, whether or not they have ever heard that word.
What will my child learn in Fit & Groove?
As Indira describes it, the first couple of years are really about fitness — motor skills, rhythm, counting — and how all of it brings a child’s personality together. Focus and self-possession are built one class at a time.
When does Fit & Groove start?
This fall, across our New Jersey towns. Message us to reserve a spot, and we’ll share the schedule and tuition as the season opens.
Celebrations
What kinds of celebrations does Leela choreograph?
Weddings and sangeets, sweet 16s and milestone birthdays, engagements and receptions, anniversaries, baby showers and godh bharai, graduations, housewarmings, retirements, and community and cultural nights like Diwali and Ugadi.
Can Leela handle the whole event, not just the dance?
Yes. Indira coordinates the whole occasion — planning, venue and vendors, décor and stage, photography and videography, music, sound and an MC, and catering referrals. The décor, the photography, the catering, and the sound come from people who do that work for a living, so you deal with one person instead of nine.
Does the choreography work for people who have never danced?
Yes. It is built around the people actually dancing — a couple’s first dance, a full bridal-party number, a sweet 16 entrance, or three generations of one family on the floor together.
Locations
Where do you teach?
East Windsor, Kendall Park and Monroe in New Jersey, and the Dallas area in Texas. Current schedules are on the locations page.
Where in Texas does Leela School of Performing Arts teach?
The Dallas-area branch serves Northlake, Argyle, and Flower Mound (76247). It is led by Jaisheela Setty, a Rangapravesam graduate of this school, teaching the same Vempati-style Kuchipudi she was raised in. Message us for the branch address and schedule.
Are you opening classes in other New Jersey towns?
Tollywood and Bollywood fitness is expanding to Parsippany, Somerset, Summit, Bridgewater, and Cherry Hill. These are not class locations yet. If one of them is your town, tell us, and we’ll let you know when a class opens.
Guru Indira
Who founded Leela School of Performing Arts?
Guru Indira Sreerama Leela, the school’s Founder and Artistic Director. She brought the Vempati Chinna Satyam lineage of Kuchipudi to New Jersey twenty-five years ago.
Who trained Guru Indira?
She started young, with a Bharatanatyam arangetram at age nine under Guru Mythili Kumar. Then came Kuchipudi: over fifteen years at the Kuchipudi Art Academy in Chennai, under Kalaprapoorna Padma Bhushan Dr. Vempati Chinna Satyam — the guru who codified and globalized the form.
How long has Guru Indira taught Kuchipudi in New Jersey?
Twenty-five years. The school has grown almost entirely by word of mouth — families telling other families.
Has Guru Indira performed internationally?
Yes. As a cultural ambassador for the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), she performed on government-sponsored tours across the former Soviet Union, Europe, Canada, and the United States.
How many honors has Guru Indira received?
Nineteen, between 2008 and 2023 — among them a New Jersey Senate and General Assembly Citation for excellence in teaching (2018), the Women Empowerment Award from TAGDV (2019), and the Shakti The Power Award for Inspirational Woman of the Year (2023).
Which senior Kuchipudi artists has Guru Indira collaborated with?
Padmasri Shobha Naidu, Sri Radha Raja Reddys, Smt. Manju Bhargavi, and other names that are themselves a lineage in this art form.
Which community organizations has Guru Indira served?
She has been Cultural Chair for the Telangana Development Forum, TAGDV, and the American Telugu Association, including ATA’s All USA Women’s Team (2016–18); an advisor to the ATA and NATA cultural conventions; and Treasurer of the Telangana Development Forum (2022–24).
The school
Are you the same school as Kuchipudi Dance Center?
Yes. Kuchipudi Dance Center is now the KDC Academy, the classical school inside Leela School of Performing Arts. Same guru, same syllabus, same families.
When was the school’s Silver Jubilee?
On 30 May 2026, marking twenty-five years of teaching Kuchipudi in New Jersey, with the community that built the school alongside Guru Indira.
Does the school offer free places?
Yes. Free places are offered quietly, without ceremony, to students for whom fees would otherwise close the door. If that is your family, say so — the conversation is private, and it will not change how your child is taught.
Can visiting artists perform or teach at the school?
Yes. The school opens its space to visiting artists to perform and to teach, free of cost. Artists traveling through New Jersey who would like to use the platform are welcome to get in touch.
